A wind turbine is a rotary device that absorbs energy from the wind. Wind energy is one of the most viable sources of renewable energy. Rotor blade is the main element in a wind turbine generator system to convert wind energy in to mechanical energy. Most blades available for commercial grade wind turbines incorporate airfoil shaped cross sections. These blades are found to be very efficient at lower wind speeds.CFD is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve fluid flows problems. The study of VAWT aims at fulfilling this gap by developing turbines with the ranges between 300W to 500W. This characteristic has advantage of wind in the regions where it has low speed and high turbulence. CFD is used to simulate various airflows and directions and to analyze the effectiveness of VAWT. This paper reviews various configurations of VAWT along with their merits and demerits.
